3286

Julius Andrae

Item 3286 is a Julius Andrae single box wooden wall phone made of oak. The overall condition of the wood and finish are good. The box is marked with a metal tag. There is a split along a glue joint which runs the length of the backboard, and there is a slight separation at the top and bottom edges of that split. Sometime in the past, the original metal folding shelf bracket must have been damaged and replaced with a wooden shelf bracket by repairmen in the field (probably acquired as a part cannibalized from another old phone). Back in those times, when parts on the phone broke, repairmen often had to use whatever replacement parts were at hand, without regard to whether those were Julius Andrae parts or not, or whether they matched the broken part exactly. The wooden shelf bracket currently on the phone does not seat securely against the front of the door (see pix). The two newer looking brass screws which are seen on the inside of the door appear to have been installed as part of the shelf repair. There are 2 small holes on the inside of the door, one is near the red wire and one of the shelf mounting screws. The other hole is near the other shelf mounting screw. These holes are perhaps associated with the shelf mounting bracket repair (unknown). These two holes go through the door and come out behind where the shelf meets the front of the door; they are not seen on the front of the phone due to their placement as mentioned above. There is a blemish on the front of the door where the shelf meets the door, on the center left side. In that same pix, there are 2 holes in the front of the door where the shelf meets the door, at the center of the shelf. There are 2 dark blemishes in the front of the door at the right edge where the shelf meets the door. On the inside of the door, there are 4 very small holes/gouges, one in each corner, that might have been used to position the door during the manufacturing process; see pix. Each gouge hole is about 1/8 inch deep. There are two small holes in the shelf on the center right side near where the shelf meets the door. There are 2 small filled holes down the center of the shelf that are typical, since they were used to help mount the shelf to the support bracket. The inside of the door shows evidence of old finish which was not completely removed during refinishing sometime in the past. The receiver is a reproduction; the binding posts for the receiver cord have been replaced sometime in the past and do not match the posts on top of the phone. The Automatic Electric transmitter is unmarked. The mouthpiece appears to have been repaired sometime in the past (? And repainted?). There are 4 or so tiny chips in the edge of the mouthpiece that show red thru the chip. The repaired surface is slightly flattened compared to the contour of the rest of the bell. The repaired area (see pix) shows a "bulge" or sag where the repair material was applied. ?? The mouthpiece may have been repainted after the repair. Overall, it is a cute 100 year old phone that has seen a few years of wear and tear. There is a paper tag dated Aug 1911 in the box. There is a 5 bar magneto that rings at the turn of the crank.
